Oorts Series
Orts (plural form of ort)A small scrap or leaving of food after a meal is completed. A scrap; a bit. (The American Heritage Dictionary)
Oort Cloud: The Oort cloud is theorized to be a vast cloud of icy planetesimals surrounding the Sun at distances ranging from 0.03 to 3.2 light years. The concept of such a cloud was proposed in 1950 by the Dutch astronomer Jan Oort, in whose honor the idea was named. Oort proposed that the bodies in this cloud replenish and keep constant the number of long-period comets entering the inner Solar System where they are eventually consumed and destroyed during close approaches to the Sun. (Wikipedia)
Both orts and The Oort Cloud are making reference to scraps or bits. In the case of orts the references to any scrap or bit and in the case of The Oort Cloud the scraps are remnants from the formation of the solar system. In as much as the pieces in the Oorts series are made from scraps left over from other art projects the name is referencing both what the piece is made from as well as referencing the wider concept of forms in space.
Because of the process of using the available scraps of wood there is not pre-planning. Each piece evolves organically as the bits are arranged.
